Potential Feedstocks for SAF Production

Did You Know Canada Has Enough Feedstocks to Produce 1 Billion Litres of SAF Annually?

Canada’s forests, farms, and waste streams hold the raw potential for world-leading SAF production. This document maps key feedstocks to viable fuel technologies—and outlines barriers to scale.

SAF can be produced from many different feedstocks using different technologies. Potential feedstocks include oils and fats, corn, agricultural residues, forest residues, municipal solid waste (MSW), and carbon dioxide. Globally, the commercial production of SAF is currently based on fats (used cooking oil, tallow, oils), but this is available in limited quantities. Other SAF technologies must become commercial to access other types of feedstocks that are more abundant. The most abundant feedstocks in Canada for SAF production are canola, forest residues, and agricultural residues.
